Future Sweden fika classics
Leave the Planet - Winter Sleep
It's really good to find out that there's still new bands coming up that has influences from Galaxie 500, Slowdive, Felt and Sarah Records. I feared that this characteristic sound will be stuck in an 'era' and days gone by. East London shoegaze band, Leave the Planet, just released a new video and its sound marries a lot of the good things from their influences while also keeping it relevant to what people would pay for to go to watch a show. They'll be having six shows in NYC so catch them (and me) if you can.
Their album will be coming out at April 17 on Kanine Records. Hope they have some advance copies at the merch table.

Chuvches + Lykke Li + the Knife = Kristal and Jonny Boy
Milano Sun - Scandinavia
Future Sweden fika tunes:
Italian named band from Gothenburg doing some Balearic stylin' can only mean good things!
Stina Nordenstam - Hopefully Yours
Future Sweden fika tunes:
It's getting depressingly cold in New York... Stina Nordenstam is just as soothing as a hot choco now.
Palpitation - Love Again
Future Sweden fika tunes:
When will I love again?
Ice Skating in Lake Blanktjärn
Whoa, this is awesome. Lake Blanktjärni is in the Jämtland region, located in the northwestern part of Sweden. I miss the cold outdoors now.
World Atlas - Queen of the Tambourine
Future Sweden fika tunes:
Who needs Belle & Sebastian when you got World Atlas?? Yeaaa!
This is their performance at Popfest NYC 2010.
Dråpe - Sister's Eye
Future Sweden fika tunes:
If Dråpe was a dish, it would be one of my faves. (Slowdive + My Bloody Valentine) * influences + Nordic souls = Dråpe.
Lyttet - Distance
Great feature on Lyttet over at Shout4Music. I've been a fan of Lyttet when I met Claire back in CMJ 2013. I've been looking for a follow-up to that nostalgic dream pop sound after Memoryhouse and I got my fix right here. "Distance" is a new single that came out last week and it's the perfect song for those slow lonely winter mornings.
"LYTTET is a Danish/Norwegian/Swedish word. It’s the past participle of the verb ‘to listen’ in all three languages and it directly translates to the English word ‘listened’. It’s pronounced differently in each language and we thought it’d be interesting to see how people would pronounce it in English also! You can use the speech synthesis tool on google translate to hear the differences - we like the Danish pronunciation best."
RIP DBA
A must read. DBA had a great run. I didn't bother going to any shows since the announcement of it's closing because I know it's just going to be crazy and a lot of people going for the wrong reasons will be there. Turns out, I don't think I fancy any of the line-ups that was 'secret'.
Acid House Kings - A Long Term Plan
Future Sweden fika tunes:
After Club 8, Acid House Kings was my next discovery in the world of Swedish Indiepop. I was still in business school when I heard these guys and it's on repeat whenever I have access to a car's cd player back then.
Aurora - Under the Stars
Future Sweden fika tunes:
Aurora is one of the most promising Nordic artists of 2014. She was one the main reasons I flew to Europe to see her live... just to find out she'll be in NY anyways for CMJ.
Hunt - I Left
Future Sweden fika tunes:
Amazing band from from Göteborg.
The Sun Days - You Can't Make Me Make Up My Mind
Not enough people are talking about The Sun Days so naturally it's Future Sweden's duty to do so. A quintent based in Gothenburg, their sound is like a love child of Makthaverskan and Veronica Falls and boy do they make their parents proud.
Tussilago December tour
Tussilago is playing a few shows around Scandinavia.
10 mins from now Vega, Copenhagen
Dec 8 Sentrum Scene, Oslo
Dec 9 Cirkus, Stockholm
If you missed it, no worries, that's what Future Sweden is here for.
Saigon - Golden
I discovered Saigon when Vulkano was DJ-ing in Taverna Brillo. And just like that, Saigon became my summer soundtrack for 2013. They finally came out with a new single, Golden, as a teaser to their album coming out early next year.
The Hanged Man - First Quarter Moon
I wasn't prepared for what's to come when I first listened to the First Quarter Moon EP. I figured I wasn't into this dark, brooding sound since most bands under this genre didn't really stick to me with the exception of Daughter and The Xx. When I started playing Rebecka Rolfart’s debut solo album though, I get it, I just haven't found enough music in this genre that I was really into. The whole album is refreshingly original and personal. I've been following Rebecka since her days with Those Dancing Days and Vulkano, both equally amazing on their own, and her solo project just shows the strength of the music community in Stockholm.
